Dr. Scardino did my surgery. July 25, 2006 William H. Silbert (Montclair, NJ USa) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
I read this book from the perspective that I knew that Dr. Scardino was personally going to do my surgery.
When I found out that I had been diagnosed with prostate cancer at virtually the same age (54) that my father had contracted it (he died from it, horribly, at 59) I was determined that I was going to get past it as completely as medically possible. To me, this meant surgery. To my way of thinking to leave even a part of an organ that has already shown a propensity toward cancer just did not make sense.
Through a personal referral I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Scardino but could not see him for seven weeks due to the need to heal from the (the very invasive) biopsy. This book was exactly what I needed to make me feel that I was still doing something about my cancer for that interminable period.
I thought that the book explained every aspect of prostate cancer in a very fair way. Is it biased toward surgery as some other reviewers have stated? I did not get a strong sense of that. I thought that every current treatment was discussed with the pros and cons of each fairly portrayed. This included cons for surgery such as the possible worst case scenarios he spelled out for urinary and bowel problems as well as sexual disfunction.
In my own case I am very happy to say seven months later that my surgery was completely successful. My final pathology showed that the cancer was completely contained within my prostate. Doctor Scardino's skill at nerve sparing surgery completely preserved my continence. My sexual potency is at about 90% of what it was before the surgery and it continues to improve (yes, the orgasms are dry but they are certainly as powerful). I am constantly amazed at just how normal my life is after all this. Dr. Scardino gave me back my life.
To me reading this book was an important part of my overall experience. The book gave me confidence in my surgeon (who just happened to be its author) but even more importantly it gave me confidence in the choices that I made. I am extremely grateful for my outcome.

This is the most comprehensive and understandable review of prostate issues I have read. With the information in Dr. Scardino's book, any man will be able to ask more pertinent questions and participate more knowledgeably in the therapy and treatment of prostate problems.
Prostate Cancer March 8, 2006 Frank Osborn 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I thought this would be a depressing read, required by my situation. To the contrary I found myself significantly comforted by the facts that Scardino presented. For anyone with the condition this is a must read. Go to uptodate.com to get research articles written after the 2005 publication and you should be comfortable you've done your research.
