5 out of 5 stars Great Product!   October 19, 2008

I first came across the notion of taking Saw Palmetto while looking for natural androgen blockers. I'm a female with the symptoms of having excess androgens - but all cosmetic, nonetheless still bothersome. Things like acne, a little more body and facial hair than average and recently, for the past year, my hair has been thinning! Pretty scary, especially for how young I am.

I've been using Women's Rogaine previous to this product, which has worked wonders. I lose only a few strands a day, whereas before, I was losing hairs constantly; clumps in my brush, in the shower, while styling, etc. So I haven't noticed a change in the hair department since taking this product.

But my skin has cleared up amazingly! I still use the same topical treatment (the Acnefree sysytem), but the difference in my complexion is very different and very nice. I have almost no new blemishes. My skin isn't nearly as oily. For that reason alone, this product is totally worth it for me! I would definitely recommend it to other ladies with similar issues.

(PS. I take two capsules a day - one in the morning, one at night).

5 out of 5 stars It works for me   April 27, 2008

Saw Palmetto saved me from much discomfort that urologists wanted to put me through ever since symptoms first appeared two decades ago. This particular product is noticeably more effective than Saw Palmetto from other manufacturers I have tried.

5 out of 5 stars NATURE'S WAY MAKES EXCELLENT STANDARDIZED SAW PALMETTO -- BUT THIS ISN'T STANDARDIZED   March 26, 2006

THIS 1-2% FREE FATTY ACID DOESN'T COMPARE TO THE 85-95% NEEDED FOR A THERAPEUTIC EFFECT

FIRST THOUGHT IS THE ABOVE IS A DEAL BREAKER - NEED STD PRODUCT:

-----*- NATURE'S WAY Q & A AS IT APPEARS AT THEIR WEBSITE TODAY

Product Q&A

1 -----*- Have any studies been conducted on Saw Palmetto?

There are over 20 well controlled studies published concerning the uses and effects of Saw Palmetto and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or swollen prostate gland.

2-----*- Is there a guaranteed potency?

The encapsulated Saw Palmetto berries have no guaranteed potency. ProstActive is Nature's Way standardized extract of Saw Palmetto berries. This product is commonly called Saw Palmetto or Saw Palmetto extract.

3-----*- How do the encapsulated berries compare with ProstActive Saw Palmetto?

Saw Palmetto berries in the whole form contain approximately 1%-2% oil or active ingredient. This oil contains fatty acids and sterols that have been closely studied and have shown positive results. The berries are dried and milled and then encapsulated.

MY TAKE ON THIS: FYI - "NATURE'S WAY" IS MY FAVORITE BRAND

Saw Palmetto really needs to be standardized for at least 85% fatty acids. All of the research, that has indictated its use, to be beneficial, has come from saw palmetto standardized from 85-95% fatty acids. Doses of 3-8% fatty acids simply have little or no therapeutic value, just like Hawthorn that is not standardized. Also, like Hawthorn, Saw Palmetto is used for the treatment of a serious ailment, BPH [Benign prostatic hyperplasia], and therefore should be treated with precision and with the care of a qualified physician.

I should say that I purchase most of my herbal and supplemental products from Swanson, but not this one, and for the reasons stated above.

SAM'S CLUB actually carries a standardized product [85% fatty acids] and you get 350 softgels for under $11.! If price is not your biggest concern, consider either "Nature's Way" or "Now" standardized Saw Palmetto. Swanson sells the "Nature's Way" product and other vendors here at Amazon carry the "Now" brand as well.

PLEASE NOTE: - NATURE'S WAY is a "pharmaceutical licensed manufacturing facility".

There seems to be a controversy that Saw Palmetto needs to be standardized to be effective. You can also read reports that Saw Palmetto has little or no benefit.

Opinions are usually like rear ends - every body has one and they are all different. All I can comment on is I started using Saw Palmetto because my best fried "Doc" is an urologist and started taking Saw Palmetto.

I am taking this brand with a dosage of one capsule in the morning and to quote my R.N. wife there is a hugh difference. To summarize: you only get up usually once instead of two or three times during the night with the rest of the comment involving a cow and a flat rock.

I will try the standardized and report back if I can detect any difference.

Still Working With This,I Really Don't Know If And How Its Affecting Me,Not Sure.
When I Run Out of These,I'm Going Back To One-A-Day Prostate,And Probably Stay With Them.
Easier And Less To Take,These Just Didn't Do It For Me.
